A large number of trade unionists of the state, private and estate sector extended their support to opposition common candidate for the upcoming presidential elections Gen. Sarath Fonseka at a gathering today. Addressing the trade unions Gen. Fonseka said that the present government has not been able to address the issues of the working class and that suppression was seen when handling demands made by the people. “Trade unions play a major role in a democratic country. If I am elected as president workers’ rights will be given due prominence”, he said. ST Those who fled the country during the war and engaged in counting dollars are now claiming its leadership after the victory was achieved says Gen. Sarath Fonseka. Speaking at a meeting of the representatives of trade unions affiliated to All Ceylon Trade Union Federation (ACTUF) today, the common candidate for the presidential election Gen. Fonseka said, “I see trade unions as a symbol of democracy. During the past we saw how this government responded to trade union struggles. We saw how the trade unions were suppressed. After my victory I would give the due place to the trade unions and in the political environment that would be created an environment where trade unions would enjoy their rights would be created. For this democracy should be compulsorily strengthened. The use of absolute power carried out by the present administration of a single family using the military victory should be stopped. Everyone knows who brought military victory to the country. Those who were terrified of the war and fled the country now say they gave the leadership to the war. This family gang should not be allowed to use the military victory to plunder the resources of the country. This is why I gave up all luxuries and came forward to work for the country,” said Gen. Fonseka. Speaking further the former Chief of Defense Staff said, “We would take measures to abolish the executive presidency which is the curse for this country. I have always fulfilled the promises I have made. Today the state service has been politicized. What’s happening there is an exercise to fatten individuals’ shares. This system should be changed. Even the Army is being politicized now. These are not ethical moves. This should be corrected immediately. For this political parties that are with the government now would join us soon. Already many who have felt the wrong path the present administration is heading are having discussions with us,” added Gen. Fonseka. Parliamentarians of the JVP K.D. Lal Kanthe and Anura Dissanayake and a large number of trade unions representatives were present.
