The Jathika Hela Urumaya (JHU) responding to the LTTE's declaration of a so-called unilateral ceasefire has announced if the government is compelled to make a choice between agreeing to a ceasefire because of the SAARC summit and continuing the anti-Tiger military offensive, then GOSL should cancel the summit. JHU General Secretary the Venerable Omalpe Sobhitha Thero compared the Tigers' 'ceasefire' offer to the adage of the drowning man trying to cling on to a straw. The Ven. Sobhitha Thero said that the LTTE which has been desperately looking for straws has at last found one in the form of the SAARC summit in Colombo. He warned the government that all these past months, the Tigers for their survival have been depending on the South's political crutches like the Tamil National Alliance, the Western People's Front, Committees for Investigating Disappearances, the pro-Tiger media mafia, Leftwing groups, NGO peaceniks, Christian Fundamentalists and the National Anti-War Front. In addition to them the bogus international community with their double standards had come forward to threaten the Rajapaksa regime with the 'human rights' whip in order to save the Tigers. The JHU General Secretary also accused the 'red wolves in patriotic garb' – the JVP – of trying to undermine the anti-LTTE campaign by staging strikes to which the LTTE had given its blessings. Ven. Thero stressed that the country should be placed above politics.
