Search queries and processing power for Google have gone up by a factor of 1000, while latency has gone down from 1000ms to 200ms. That’s a whupping 0.2 seconds for a single search.</p><p> The significant reason as to why 1000 machines is needed, instead of previously 12, is because the complete Google search index is stored in memory. Quite mind-boggling to even think about it.
