All set for the 2006 ICC Champions Trophy Cricket tournament, and it's due to start on 7th October. The final will be held on 5th November. This is the 5th time an ICC Champions Trophy tournament being held. The first 2 tournaments were known as ICC Knock outs. ICC Knockout 1998 ICC Knockout 2000 ICC Champions Trophy 2002 ICC Champions Trophy 2004 Sri Lanka doesn't seems to have a good past records in ICC Champions Trophy tournaments, except for the 2002 Champions Trophy, which was hosted by Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka, played well to defeat World Champions Australia in the semi final, but rain interrupted the final which was scheduled to be played between Sri Lanka and India. Apparently, Sri Lanka became joint champions with India for the ICC Champions Trophy Tournament 2002. My personal favorite, ICC Champions Trophy tournament was the one which played last time. I still remember the final match between West Indies and England, where Courtney Browne and Ian Bradshaw put an amazing partnership to win the Champions Trophy for Caribbean Islands. This time, the tournament starts with controversy even before the first ball being balled, as India is campaigning against the concept of ICC Champions trophy. BCCI insist on Champions trophy is a burden for the already busy cricketing schedules of players. They say, it's not a good idea to play a "mini world cup" in between 2 main world cups of cricket. Sri Lanka, this time is placed in the preliminary round group for the ICC Champions trophy 2006. We will have to play Bangladesh, West Indies and Zimbabwe first, to be qualified for the main tournament with other test playing nations. First match of the ICC Champions Trophy 2006 will be between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, on 7th October at Punjab Cricket Association Stadium. Then, we'll play Zimbabwe on 10th October and West Indies on 14th October. Only 2 teams from the preliminary round group will be selected to play in the main tournament of the ICC Champions Trophy 2006. Below is the Match Schedule for the ICC Champions Trophy 2006 main tournament Q1 and Q2 are the qualifiers from the preliminary round matches of ICC Champions Trophy. Two semifinals will be played on 1st and 2nd November. The grand final of the ICC Champions Trophy 2006 will be held on 5th November 2006 at Brabourne Stadium in Mumbai.
