Message: <blockquote data-quote="lkdood" data-source="post: 3689764" data-attributes="member: 92282">Tamil Nadu Congress President K V Thankgabalu today said the Centre would 'soon' send External Affairs Minister Pranab Mukherjee to Sri Lanka to try and bring about an immediate ceasefire in the island nation. "The Centre will send Pranab Mukherjee 'very soon' to Sri Lanka to prevail upon the Sri Lankan government to implement a ceasefire in the island nation and to bring about a solution to the Sri Lanka Tamil crises," he told reporters on the sidelines of party's 124th foundation day here. "Centre will also fulfill its promises given to the all-party delegation from Tamil Nadu, which met Prime Minister Manmohan Singh recently on the Sri Lankan Tamils issue," he said. The delegation, led by Chief Minister M Karunanidhi met Manmohan Singh on December 4 to seek the Centre's intervention to resolve the Sri Lankan Tamils issue and demanded that the Centre prevail upon the island government to announce an immediate ceasefire in fighting between the Army and LTTE. Yesterday, Chief Minister M Karunanidhi had also made a 'tearful appeal' to the Centre to depute Pranab Mukherjee to Colombo to make efforts and ensure a ceasefire there. Thankgabalu claimed that the UPA government at the Centre has been fulfilling all the demands of the people through various development schemes. Welcoming Karunanidhi's recent statement prohibiting any new state-run liquor shop in the state, he said "It is also the policy of the Congress to bring about total prohibition in the state," he said. On the Thirumangalam by-elections, scheduled for January 9, he said the Congress was working hard to ensure the victory of DMK candidate Latha Adhyaman.<a href="http://www.ptinews.com/pti%5Cptisite.nsf/0/23F54F8589226DAD6525752D004AC3BB?OpenDocument" target="_blank">pti</a></blockquote>
