All the hospitals in the island are to receive an ambulance each under the programme.Japan International Corporation Agency (JICA) has assisted the Health Department to purchase 124 ambulances at a cost of Rs. 7.5 million each.Government funds have been allocated to purchase 250 ambulances at a total cost of Rs. 2.805 billion.Sri Lankan health authorities say that the fleet of ambulances needed to be increased by 400 to maintain an efficient emergency healthcare service.(Photos by Chandana Perera)</blockquote>
