Not all hobbyists need to do this but for Professional use you need.Monitors from different manufacturers and types will vary in what they show. But there's an industry standard. So if you calibrate your monitor - then you can assume that it will have a fairly good visuals on other monitors.Do do this properly you need a Colorimeter. The X-Rite i1 Display Pro and Spyder Pro are the most widely used popular ones.Note that there's software based Monitor adjustments as well but what your eye perceives is quite subjective.
