When  the demonstration was about to commence at about 5.00 p.m. today a group  of government goons had arrived at the scene and attacked the  demonstrators. At the same time police riot squad targeted the  demonstrators with a baton charge, water cannon and tear gas.  JVP  Parliamentarian Sunil Handunneththi had arrived at the scene and had  tried to discuss with police officers when he too was targeted by the  water cannon. The journalists who were covering the demonstration too  have been attacked.
