Kandy-Nuwara Eliya road through Gampola, Kandy-Colombo road, Pinga oya area in Kandy-Katugastota road, Kandy-Badulla road (Mahaweli Raja Mawatha), Kadugannawa area along the Kandy-Colombo and the Kandy-Nuwara Eliya road through Rikillagaskada have been identified as landslides prone areas. "A possible disaster can be minimized if the authorities take steps to make the public aware of lurking danger," the geologist cautioned. Dr. Kehelpannala said that unstable areas along the Kandy railway line have the similar risk of possible landslides and pointed out the necessity of conducting surveys in risky areas by the Railway Department. "A dangerous landslide will take place in case heavy rain (between 250-300 mm) continually fell on these unstable areas for a period of 15 hours.
