Responding to a query, Rohitha Rajapaksa said that it would be a joint launch by the Supreme Group of Sri Lanka and China Satellite Communications Company Limited, a state-owned venture.Asked whether he would be attending the launch, Rajapaksa junior said that he couldn’t make it due to some other commitment also in the same field.Having received the required expertise as well as training in China, Spain and Russia, Rohitha Rajapaksha joined the Supreme Group or Supreme Sat as a technical advisor/engineer.Rohitha Rajapaksa said that he was based in China for several months. He said that he joined the Supreme Sat project after completing his Bachelor of Aerospace Engineering degree.He said that felt he should be involved in the SupremeSAT project though he earlier wanted to become the world’s youngest astronaut. He pointed out that in the SAARC region, only two countries had their own satellites.When pointed out that they were many other issues, which should be tackled before seeking to own satellites, Rohitha Rajapaksa acknowledged that there were many other pressing requirements. The Supreme Sat launch was a private sector project, he insisted. According to him, Supreme Group intends to establish a Satellite earth station at Pallekele in April next year, followed by the launch of two satellites in June 2013 and December 2015.Addressing the media in Colombo yesterday, SupremeSAT Chairman R. M. Manivannan explained the circumstances under which he got in touch with Chinese state-owned-China Great Wall Industry Corporation to go ahead with the project. He said that Western manufacturers ignored their initiative, though Supreme Sat was confident of its success in the wake of the conclusion of the conflict.Manivannan appreciated the role played by Rajapaksha. According to him, the proposed launch in June 2013, too, would be a joint venture, whereas Supreme SAT intended to launch a fully owned satellite in December 2015.</blockquote>
