Transport Minister Dullas Alahpperuma had on Wednesday (23) requested several of the President’s friends to intervene to advice him against consuming alcohol every night and shouting at government officials and ministers for no apparent reason as it was unhealthy for his political career as well as physical health. Dullas had said President Mahinda Rajapakse after quitting alcohol consumption when he became the Opposition Leader has now started to consume liquor on a daily basis.

The Minister had said this to government candidate at the Southern Provincial Council election, Chandima Rasaputhra and several other close friends of the President.

He had also proposed that several leading monks close to the President be asked to advice him against this habit.

Before the President had started to consume liquor he used to engage in a routine exercise regime every morning to keep fit and active was now becoming lethargic.

Dullas had said although the President has been asked not to attack the Opposition Leader and any other member of the opposition in his speeches, leaving them for the likes of Mervyn Silva, Wimal Weerawnasa and Rajitha Senaratne, the President was personally attacking opposition members in his speeches, which is having a negative impact on his image. He had also noted that the speech made by the President attacking the US President was one such example and that he has since of late been taking steps to remove certain speeches made by the President from the media.
