http://www.bbc.co.uk/sinhala/news/story/2006/09/060904_unp_sampoor.shtml UNP happy for 'Sampoor victory' UNP leader Ranil Wickramasinghe UNP has offered 'unconditional' support to solve national question The main opposition in Sri Lanka has hailed forces the victory by security forces over Tamil Tigers in Sampoor. The United National Party (UNP) said the party is "happy" that there have been some achievements after continuous battles in the north east where hundreds of troops were killed. "The security forces had to retaliate due to attacks by the LTTE in breach of the Cease Fire Agreement (CFA)," UNP Assistant General Secretary Tissa Attanayake told bbcsinhala.com . He, however, stressed that the government has to come out with a proposal to solve the national question. "The President and the government has repeatedly said they are only fighting against LTTE terrorism and they are to propose a solution for the Tamil people. We are eagerly awaiting that proposal," he added. The President and the government has repeatedly said they are only fighting against LTTE terrorism and they are to propose a solution for the Tamil people. We are eagerly awaiting that proposal Tissa Attanayake The LTTE have admitted that security forces are now in control over strategically important eastern Sri Lankan town, Sampoor. "Sri Lankan forces are now in control of Sampoor," Tamil Tiger military spokesman Rasiah Ilanthirayan told the BBC. Speaking with BBC Sandeshaya from LTTE stronghold Kilinochchi Ilanthirayan said that their cadres are now "tactically withdrawing" from the strategically important town. The UNP said the party will support the government "unconditionally" to solve the national question. "Under the Liam Fox agreement, we even offered our support to former President Chandrika Kumaratunga," Attanayake said. The UNP and the then ruling party, Sri Lanka Freedom Party (SLFP), agreed to share information on the peace initiatives under a guidance of former British state minister Liam Fox.
