Dear friend, Thought to comment on this. I too shared that view sometimes back. Your feeling is reasonable - but one won't maintain that thoughts when one learns what Budhurajanana Wahanse disclosed about that. Buddha Sashanaya is like a great ocean; and won't keep carcasses (Mala Kunu) in it. A Bikkhu/Bikkhuni not following the Path staining his/her Sila does not belong to Sangha even if he/her stay amidst the Sangha. It is some incident like that led to disclosure of Paharada Sutta [anguttara nikaya->attaka nipatha->maha vagga->paharada sutta | a deshna on Paharada Sutta by Ven. Kiribathgoda Gnanananda Thero: http://www.gautamabuddha.org/downloads/mp3/6/6.8_paharada_sutta.mp3 ]. Context that led to disclosure of the Sutta is stated in the Uposatha Sutta (anguttara nikaya->attaka nipatha->maha vagga->uposatha sutta) [I could not locate a Deshana on it...] We can only pitty such Bikkhus; and hope that they will realize the mistakes/truth. And let's practice Dhamma. Buddha Sashanaya gets manifested and shines in the world; when Bikkhu, Bikkhuni, Upasaka, Upasika start practicing what Samma Sambuddha Gauthama disclosed. As Samma Sambuddha Gauthama has clearly proclaimed Buddha Sashana will never get threadtened (contrary to popular belief in Sri Lanka) by things outside it. It will get vanished when nobody follows it in pure form (it dissappears due to internal disputes and having no followers of Dhamma & Vinaya)... See what happened to Buddhism India? Wasn't it because people embraced Mahayana and gave up Buddha's original teachings. See how Buddhism in Sri Lanka has survived all attempts to eliminate it (during past few centuries)? It is the Sri Lankans that wrote down the Buddhist teachings; it is the Sri Lankans that still carry on original Buddhist teachings to the world even at the moment... Do not worry about the Bikkhus like those you had mentioned; they will wither away if the revival we see in practicing of Buddhism continues. We should be proud of our heritage (it's not to look down upon others; but to convince others to join); and practice Dhamma ourselves... Do not know how many would agree. But I believe with reasons in what I've just said... Thanks Theruwan saranai!
