Moderna, Inc. just announced new data showing that mRNA-1273, its COVID-19 vaccine candidate, remains stable at 2° to 8°C (36° to 46°F), the temperature of a standard home or medical refrigerator, for 30 days. Stability testing supports this extension from an earlier estimate of 7 days. mRNA-1273 remains stable at -20° C (-4°F) for up to six months, at refrigerated conditions for up to 30 days and at room temperature for up to 12 hours. Let's wait for the full reports...Moreover they claim it's 95 per cent effective and appears to work in those who need protecting the most – people aged over 65. A bit more details.... Moderna has announced positive efficacy data from their large phase 3 trial. 30,000 people aged 18 or over were enrolled in the US, and these included older people (7,000 over 65) as well as younger people with risk factors for severe disease (5,000). The estimate of efficacy is very similar to that reported for the similar, mRNA vaccine trial announced last week by Pfizer/BioNTech, 94.5%, and they provided more detail than Pfizer: amongst 95 cases of confirmed Covid illness occurring at least two weeks after the second dose of vaccine, 90 occurred in the placebo group and 5 in the vaccinated group. The 95 cases included 15 patients older than 65, and 25 from diverse communities including 4 Black or African Americans. No breakdown was provided within this subgroup, but all 11 severe cases of Covid occurred in the placebo group. “The number of confirmed Covid cases reported was similar (95) to those in the interim analysis of the Pfizer trial (94 cases), though Pfizer will shortly announce results on its full cohort of 164 cases.
