Nokia follows this trend completely and designs trendy mobiles with striking colors. The Nokia N76 is such a design mobile, which is available in red and black. It is true, these colors are not very striking, but the combination color and form manages to provide a trendy mobile phone. The Nokia N-series mobile phones are in general true multimedia mobiles; a media player for music and film is standard present, as well as a digital camera. The Nokia N76 likewise possesses all these functions and can be used as a fully-fledged MP3 player, a digital camera and, of course, even as a handset. The dividing border gets thinner and thinner, sometimes I even ask myself if you can still make phone-calls with a mobile. Nokia provided the red version of the Nokia N76 for us; how the multimedia phone performs in real life, can be read in the following Nokia N76 review.

Nokia N76 - Design

The Nokia N76 is a clamshell mobile with a large in- and outer screen. The digital camera of the Nokia N76 can be activated by means of the menu or via the camera button on the right hand side of the device. If the camera is activated when the Nokia N76 is closed, the screen on the outside turns into the viewfinder. When the mobile phone is opened, the regular screen can be used to find the subject. Unfortunately, the camera in the Nokia N76 does not feature an auto focus.

Nokia N76 - Shutter lag

Actually, like all mobiles with a digital camera that I reviewed so far, the Nokia N76 likewise has a shutter lag problem. Meanwhile, I updated the firmware of the Nokia N76 so there has been some improvement, but a shutter lag remains present, and makes it nearly impossible to photograph fast moving subjects. You must have taken quite a few pictures to be able to judge when to press the shutter release if you want to photograph moving subjects. However, un-expectedly moving subjects are nearly impossible to capture.

Nokia N76 - Settings

The Nokia N76 possesses different setting possibilities for the digital camera. There are a few scenes from which you can choose, to get an as good as possible result. You have the choice from auto, portrait, landscape, night and night portrait mode. Also for the flash you have several setting modes; you can set the flash on auto, always on, anti-red eye and off. Besides this, you also have the possibility to set the self-timer, the white balance and the exposure values.

Nokia N76 - Image quality

The image quality of the Nokia N76 lives up to the expectations. For a camera in this segment, such a quality is average; he who wants to use his mobile better or more aimed at photography, should choose the higher resolution models. If the picture is taken with good lighting situations, the quality is decent and the photos are well exposed and of average focus. It gets different in twilight, the noise values get so high that the photo can hardly be used. This is not very uncommon for a mobile phone.

SanDisk 2GB microSD

The memory of the Nokia N76 can be extended with a microSD memory card. You have the choice of cards with different capacities and speeds. We chose the SanDisk 2GB microSD memory card because of the stability and speed of the SanDisk cards. You can also choose for the 2GB microSD Memory Kit. This way, you won’t only have a microSD card, but also a microSD adapter and a microSD to SD adapter. The advantage of the microSD Memory Kit is that you will only have to purchase one card, which can be used in several products, under the condition that these products support these cards.

Nokia N76 - Menu

The menu of the Nokia N76 is synoptic and provided with clearly recognizable symbols. If the symbols are still not clear enough, these are also supported by a word that tells us what every menu subject serves as. You can let the menu represent like blocks next to each other, in a horse shoe or V design or as a list. Personally, I think the reproduction in blocks the most synoptic. The most important subjects like the phone book, SMS messages, multimedia files, the calendar and the Bluetooth functions, can be opened directly via the main screen of the Nokia N76.

Nokia N76 - MP3 player

The MP3 player or better: the multimedia player of the Nokia N76 is of an extraordinary quality. Nevertheless, I detect a little fault in the design with the use of the headphones; when the headphones are plugged into the mobile, the flap can’t open all the way. When the mobile phone is closed, you can use the three buttons on the front side to start the MP3 player, to rewind or forward to the next song or to pause. By means of the button on the right hand side of the handset, you can manage the volume of the song that is playing at that moment.

Nokia N76 - Battery

The battery of the Nokia N76 is a 3.7 Volt 700mAh Nokia BL-4B battery. The times which Nokia indicated are realistic, the standby time is even one to two days longer, according to what I measured. The calling time will be about the time that Nokia indicated.
