I think the following ideas might help... - We should learn (sutha) and accumulate (datha) Dhamma in ourselves- We should memorizing to some extent (at leat the most vital things)... it's sufficient even if we can remember the Sinhala meanings... (wachasa parichitha)- We should try to think according to Dhamma so as to understand what we've learnt (manasanupekkitha)- We should correct our view to be aligned with Dhamma (dhittiya suppatividdha)Once we have some understanding (say a body of understanding on Dhamma...) we can verify/compare whatever we learn (like the statement you have in the problem) against it... This allows us to filter away things we hear from others (I mean things that cannot be traced to Original teachings)... It's possible because Dhamma is Swakkatho...At the same time: we should never reject anything coming from the Suttas (even if it appears contrary).. because our thinking/mind is misleading most of the times...Hope my explanation addresses your problem...Theruwan saranai!</blockquote>
