The matches that produced some brilliant rugby were the games between Kingswood and Isipathana and also St.Peters vs. Trinity played in Kandy.</p><p></p><p>Royal in hard fought win against Wesley (12-0)</p><p></p><p>Royal college Colombo went through some anxious moments in their game against Wesley played last Friday at the Royal Sports complex. Wesley College took the challenge to the defending champ and it almost came good for them as the Royalists only managed to score 5 points till the dying stages of the game.</p><p></p><p>The Wesley team was seen hard at defense and didn’t let the Reid Avenue boys settle in. they were constantly disrupting their attack with some solid defense. The first try for the Royal team came when prop forward Yudith Karunaratne went over for a push over try. The conversion was missed and they were leading the game 5 points to 0. Wave after wave of Royal attack was seen but they could not penetrate the wisely defense and make the all important finishes. At the final stages of the match hooker Abdul Jabbar went over for their second try of the match. This was converted by fly half Arshad Jamaldeen.</p><p></p><p>Royal will go against Dharmaraja</p><p></p><p>Wesley will play St.Anthony’s</p><p></p><p>Thomians defeat Antho in a thriller (15-12)</p><p></p><p>The S.Thomas’ rugby team overcame a spirited St.Anthony’s side on Friday by 15 points to 12 at the Mount Lavinia grounds. It was a super game with both sides dishing out some gritty rugby.</p><p></p><p>The Thomians went in to the match as favorites and started off well as they drew first blood through their outside center Anrudda Wilwara who did a brilliant loop with debutant wing three Shevaan Kapuwatte and score under the post. Thishan Wickramasinghe had no problem with the conversion. The Anthonians hit back hard with a push over try and came close to the Thomian score being 7-5. It was Anurudda ‘Wili’ again to score for the Thomians as he sped past couple of defenders and scored on the corner post. This extended the lead to 12-5.</p><p></p><p>The try of the match came in the second half when the Anthonian scrum half Dinesh Liyanage caught the Thomian defense napping and took a quick tap on their 22 and sprinted a good 70 meters to score under the post. The Thomians had enough and more opportunities to score but just couldn’t get the penetration needed. They could have capitalized on Antho having only 13 players on the field due to two players being in the bin. Captain Rajindra Gunasekara and last year’s skipper Shaveen Kapuwatte was guilty of dropping the ball on the try line and that cost them an easy 14 points. The stand out players for the Thomians were hooker Anjula De Silva, Sudarshan Muthuthanthri and Anurudda Wiliwara. For the Anthonians it was number 9 Dinesh Liyanage, skipper and full back Tharndu Chanaka and flanker Sajeed Lahir.</p><p></p><p>STC will go against Isipathana</p><p></p><p>SACK will play Wesley</p><p></p><p>Kings reign supreme against Pathana(22-15)</p><p></p><p>Kingswood College Kandy over powered the Isipathana team 22-15 at the Havelock Park grounds last Friday. Kingswood after being down 12-15 at half time came out with a very strong performance and achieved their second win of the season.</p><p></p><p>It was another solid performance by the Kings lead by Rajitha Sansoni who outplayed the Isipathana side especially in the second half. This was the second defeat faced by Isipathana in the league after going down to a strong Petes outfit last week. The first points were scored by the home team as they were awarded a penalty try and that gave the home team the lead by 7 points. Kingswoodians hit back immediately with two breathtaking tries, first by Mohamed Fazli and then by skipper Rajitha Sansoni who was the finisher of a well compiled move by the backs. The first conversion was successful, but the second failed.</p><p></p><p>Pathana were not going to give up easily and they hit back with vengeance through wing three quarter Umayanga Sooriyabandara. The conversion was not successful. They however managed to take the lead going into lemons through the boot of fly half Prashan Attanayake who slotted over a 25 meter penalty.</p><p></p><p>The second half saw the Kings going in strong with some brilliant offensive play. The next try for them came from winger Prabath Jayathileke and this got the visitors the lead. It was the up to the place kicker Oshan Perera to extend the lead through a penalty and he obliged putting it over.
