[QUOTE="skywalker, post: 2238683, member: 38393"] Trinity and Kingswood left to battle for the league title By M. Shamil Amit The Singer inter-schools rugby league tournament is at its tail end with only one match left to be played for seven teams in this top division. St Peter’s is the only team in this group that has completed their assignments and they ended the tournament in the way they started with a narrow win over Isipathana. Though they have won six of the eight matches they have played they are out of contention and will not be in a position to retain the league title for another year. Trinity who have been the leaders since the inception of the tournament have maintained their form and the loss to St Peter’s have not affected their progress. The Lions after their win against traditional rivals Royal over the weekend have put themselves in a strong position to lift the Singer league title. But to achieve this they will have to defeat their home town rivals Kingswood in the final encounter scheduled to be played during the weekend. It’s a must win situation for both the teams as they are the only two teams left to fight out the battle to become the league champions. If Trinity wins the league title it will be a great achievement as they came into the top division only in 2007 and in that year they ended in the seventh slot. On the other hand the Kingswoodians have lifted the coveted league title on several occasions and the last two being in the years 2004 and 2005 before St Peter’s took it in 2006 and retained it in 2007. If Trinity or Kingswood wins the game either of the two will be the ultimate champions. The completion of the eighth week of matches and the final outcome of the Trinity and Royal encounter saw St Peter’s being denied of being in the fray, but even that it would have been a long process. If St Peter’s were to be contention Royal should have defeated Trinity and Kingswood should go down to Trinity. But the easy win achieved by the Lions over Royal saw the battle being left for only two teams for the coveted title. The weekends match also saw Trinity clear the first hurdle of the two way battle of the Bradby Shield and now they have a healthy 12 points lead before going into the second leg in another two weeks time. In the other matches during the weekend Kingswood outclassed Dharmarajah 26-9 to record their sixth win while St Anthony’s at last saw the winning post after six matches when they defeated Vidyartha 34-11. Meanwhile the Division 1B has also turned into a battle between two teams St Joseph’s and Mahanama for the league title in this category. Here again the two teams will fight each other on Friday (June 20). Both the teams are unbeaten with the Josephians recording seven wins out of seven and Mahanama six out of seven with one draw. But the shock of the weekend was the defeat of S. Thomas’ to St Joseph’s. Though this was not a league game this is an annual encounter played for the Lady Evelyn Jayatileke Shield saw the Josephians turn tables after having given the lead to the Thomians Nevertheless it has been a competitive season with no quarter asked nor given. All the teams underwent fluctuating fortunes and none of the teams in the top division were able maintain their unbeaten record. Likewise it was almost incident free games played between the teams except for two incidents outside the field. One was the stoning of the vehicles at Pallekella after the encounter between Trinity and Dharmarajah The other incident being in the match between Royal and Trinity where some spectators of the former unable to take up defeat by their team began throwing missiles onto the field which saw the being stagnated for nearly ten minutes. The spectators would do a favour to their teams if they behave in a gentlemanly manner by taking up defeat with their heads high and not try to and tarnish the image of the team and school and the effort put in by the 30 odd players on the field.
