Message: <blockquote data-quote="netlife007" data-source="post: 14606412" data-attributes="member: 79514">Shame on you Rauff Hakeem!   I  would like to pose some questions to the Justice Minister on the topic  of animal welfare in particular reference to the Animal Welfare Bill   Are you not undertaking your duties as Justice Minister because, a.       Part  (VI) Clause 22 of the animal welfare bill that advocates to “prevent  the infliction upon such animal of unnecessary fear or pain” runs  contrary to the halal method of animal slaughter owing to your religious  belief?   b.      Is  your personal indifference to the total ban on buffaloes/slaughter of  cows below 12 year of age/cows incapable of breeding or unfit for  agriculture work/domesticated cows is what is delaying the enactment of  the Animal Welfare Bill?  c.       Why  is the Justice Minister delaying the enactment of the Animal Welfare  Bill that has been prepared by the Law Commission of Sri Lanka after  extensive consultations with the public and after examining laws of  other jurisdictions?  d.      If  the objectives of the animal welfare bill is to treat animals humanely,  to prevent cruelty to animals and secure the protection and welfare of  animals by establishing a National Animal Welfare Authority to provide  Regulations and Codes of Practice – why is Minister Hakeem brushing this  important legislature under the carpet?  e.      The  Animal Welfare Bill replaces the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals  Ordinance No 13 of 1907 and provides natural justice and basic freedoms  for animals and seeks to safeguard Sri Lanka’s historical reputation for  animal welfare – if the Justice Minister is delaying implementing the  Animal Welfare Bill because of his personal religious whims it is an  affront to the entire nation and questions why a Government should give  an important ministerial portfolio to a person who places his religion  and its beliefs contrary to what is of interest to the larger  population.   Minister  Hakeem secured himself the post of Justice Minister through much  horsetrading but those who handed him such an important post must not  look away as he is using his office to only advance laws and justice  that suits only his religion and faith. In time to come this is a great  danger to the nation.
