Yanthrika Pabala Regimenthuwa SRI LANKA ARMY’S newly-raised Mechanized Infantry Regiment made history today (28th January 2008) when eight officers and 125 other ranks after successful completion of their training received their laurels in Jaffna, infusing a new vigor of life to the sphere of infantry. A year ago, thanks to the foresight and able leadership of the Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Sarath Fonseka, birth of the new regiment saw its light realizing the importance of having a separate mechanized unit to meet with current terrorist threats and challenges. The concept behind the Regiment “Marching forward with vigor and determination” as the motto attracted 3rd Light Infantry Battalion, 10th Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment Battalion, 4th Gajaba Regiment Battalion along with members of the 5th & 6th Sri Lanka Armoured Corps and incorporated under 1st , 2nd & 3rd Mechanized Infantry Regiment. The new Regiment supported by veteran and battle-hardened officers saw a healthy growth within a span of one year after its inception on 4th February 2007. Monday’s (28) first-ever investiture of medals to this special Regiment where a gathering of nearly 1500 officers, soldiers and guests were present received another moral boost plus an experience, quite identical to their military training when terrorists operating from Kalmune point in Pooneeryn went on directing artillery rounds to coincide with the award of medals to these heroes for the first time. However, the ceremony continued smoothly and without any considerable impact. (See separate Situation Report stories on the day) Commander Security Forces – Jaffna (SF-J) Major General G.A. Chandrasiri took the salute as Chief Guest on the occasion as many Divisional, Brigade and Unit Commanders graced the occasion. The parade of the medal recipients was commanded by the Mechanized Infantry Regiment Commanding officer Lieutenant Colonel a G. D.N. Jayasundara. Jaffna Commander Major General G.A. Chandrasiri in his brief address to the occasion highlighted the importance of eradicating the enemy with determination and mechanized strategies in order to create peace for all the people of Sri Lanka. Major General J. Jayasuriya also participated in the ceremony.
