Talking Cricket with Roshan Abeysinghe SLPL goes to Galle, Hambantota What is the status of the SLPL? When will it happen or will it actually happen? These may be the questions on many a lip of Sri Lankan cricket fans. The reason for such interest could be the impact the whole tournament created in its first year though I am sure there were areas the organisers were surely going to look at come the next year. Also another possible reason for the interest in the SLPL could be particularly in view of the Big Bash in Australia and the current goings on the IPL. Television screens in most cricket loving nations are filled with the action of the great stars of the modern day battling out for their respective Indian franchises creating immense pleasure and excitement for all. In the wake of such great action and excitement it won’t be a surprise for the Sri Lankan cricket lovers to expect something similar from their own Premier League which is now known as the SLPL! To begin with the organizers – Somerset Entertainment Ventures and Sri Lanka Cricket – have made the correct move in the second edition by deciding to spread the games around the country. It was extremely obvious that from the first occurrence the R Premadasa Stadium is not the best venue to play so many games and also have the big crowds the format needs. Colombo is a city where hundreds of thousands of people come in for their employment and really have very little time to spend on leisure on a regular basis and hence scheduling so many games in front of empty seats didn’t do the event any justice. I am sure it was most demoralising to everybody involved to stage a game of absolute action before a virtual empty house. It made the organisers and the franchise owners take the unusual step of filling in the ground with artificial support which is not the way to go in leagues such the SLPL. The countries where such leagues have been staged have always attracted big crowds with the exception of Sri Lanka and hence looking to tackle that issue is without doubt a step in the right direction. As a result of the first experience the second edition of the SLPL will be staged in almost every major cricket location which ranges from Colombo and spreads across the country covering cities such as Kurunegala, Kandy, Dambulla, Galle, Hambantota and Moratuwa. This will also mean that teams will justify their identity. For example Wayamba where its provincial capital is Kurunegala will actually play a game there and also play a few games in Dambulla ensuring that they capture the imagination, support and the participation of the people of the area. The same applies to Ruhuna too with games in Galle and Hambantota. To succeed as an event the SLPL needs not just quality players and good cricket but the support of the respective people. Otherwise as it happened the first time the game will be watched for its entertainment and quality and not for the belongingness of the respective segment in the country. True the rivalry amongst regions in Sri Lanka is nowhere close to an Indian situation. Hence the reason for the vast following the IPL has at the moment. It’s also true that the SLPL can never be an IPL. In fact I wonder whether there will ever be another event to match the IPL. But despite such a situation it’s also important that the SLPL identifies and works on the finer points of making the event a success and one of the standout situations is the crowd support! The decision to play games especially in Kurunegala, Galle, Moratuwa and Dambulla should be lauded whilst it’s a shame that Matara hasn’t got a game. Besides it’s a pity that Sri Lanka still doesn’t have any major cricket venue in either the North or the East. Had that been the case the whole meaning of the League could have easily been fulfilled. However when one looks at the development plans in the said provinces it won’t be too long before games are staged in those parts of the country too. Politically this will be the tonic Sri Lanka needed as a country as these were the regions that once fought a thirty-year war to detach themselves from the country Sri Lanka. In a scenario such as that to have all races playing together and cheering together can be the perfect answer to the world full of ills, where tolerance, love and consideration for each other will stand out. I am sure in time to come the SLPL if staged in such areas could be a perfect solution to such a problem if it still exists. Also the latest news on the league has it that the event is ready to take off on the 10th of August and will conclude on the 7thSeptember with just one game at a venue on a day. Unlike the last year the SLPL will have two TV crews too and according to the CEO of the event Ajith Jayasekera the highly respected officer and the gentleman of the Sri Lanka Air Force there will be much better players too in the draft come the second edition of the SLPL. So with seven franchises at the starting line backed by real quality on the playing field the next edition of the SLPL hopefully is going to be an event of great excitement © Ceylon Today
