Dear Sir/blah blah, I write to you with nothing but sadness due to the various actions taken by Sri Lanka Telecom PLC to limit my connection. I have been using an ADSL Connection provided by SLT with the package Home. During the time when I signed up for this connection the terms I agreed was that I will get a speed of 512kbps download and 128 kbps upload without any data limitations, unlimited for a price of Rs.xxxx. Along with this SLT also offered another package but the speed was doubled for a monthly price of Rsxxxx. I noticed over the years SLT has taken steps to discontinue this package but even they agree that there are certain amount of customers who are still using the unlimited packages. After several years SLT started to offer new improved packages with high speeds (8Mbps), data caps & low monthly rentals. Regardless these features some of us who were satisfied with the current package stayed on. But since 2010 SLT has taken actions to make our internet experience quite annoying by throttling our connections. They monitored our connections for a couple of months then slowed our connections if we pass a threshold data amount. Since last October SLT has admitted to throttling the existing unlimited users if they pass the 40GB to speeds of an age old dial up connection, 64kbps. I had to find out about this through making numerous calls to the SLT hotline at 1212. Someone even with the least technical knowledge can understand however is that SLT has no right to throttle our connections without any prior notice. Even though they offer the services they don't have the right to play the fool with our internet connection as they wish. As you can notice the world is developing and slowly moving into a cloud based architecture. Every device we use is being synced through the internet and most of the data is saved on external servers. For us, Sri Lankans to take advantage of these services need a strong internet connection. And 64kpbs internet connection isn't the way to go. Even in Sri Lanka most of the issues are handled through the internet. The internet has become an essential part of ones life. Also I must note that SLT is even promoting using a wireless router in our homes, Wi-Fi router means that every member of the family can use the internet. This clearly means that in a household people can't be checking their usage every second to see if they are close to the data cap or not. Each should have the freedom to use the internet as they want and this isn't violating any SLT policy as no one outside the household is using the connection, even if SLT thinks it is why on earth are they promoting Wi-Fi routers? With all this what I am asking you is, 1. SLT to provide us the unlimited connection they agreed us or not be sensible with the data cap with all the packages. (minimum 50GB) 2. Increase the speeds of the packages to at least 1Mbps minimum as President Mahinda Rajapakshe mentioned in the budget 2011. 3. If SLT plays the fool again with our internet connections without any proper permission they be punished by the government. Thank you.
