Message: <blockquote data-quote="0714" data-source="post: 9800162" data-attributes="member: 261886">Highways and Road Development Ministry's Secretary Admiral Wasantha Karannagoda with high ranking officials in the Ministry and the RDA visited many locations recently to ascertain progress of the Southern expressway project recently.Completion of the Southern Expressway will also reduce travel time between Colombo and Matara to one and half hours from the current four hours travel time between Colombo and Matara.The expressway consists of four lanes. The first phase of the Highway spans Kottawa to Dodangoda (34.3km) while the second stretch is from Dodangoda to Kurundugahahetekma (31.7km). The third stretch is from Kurundugahahetekma to Matara (65km).The Asian Development Bank (ADB) and Japan Bank for International Corporation (JBIC) have funded three phases. In addition, there are eleven access points to enter the Southern Highway. Therefore, these access points at Kottawa, Kahathuduwa,Galanigama, Dodangoda, Levanduwa, Kurundugahahetekma, Baddegama, Pinnaduwa, Deegoda, Kokmaduwa and Godagama will be developed as modern townships under this project.The first section, which is 34.3 Kilometres long, funded by the Japan Bank for International Corporation (JBIC) is in progress handled by the China Harbour Engineering Company.The second section is also funded by the JBIC while the third section with access to Galle Fort is funded by the Asian Development Bank (ADB).Meanwhile five main bridges located in the second section from Dodangoda to Kurundugahahetekma are currently being constructed. They are the Kalu ganga bridge in Welipenna (150 metres), Bentara ganga bridge connecting the Kalutara district and the Galle district (750metres), Mahauragaha bridge (120 metres), Welipanna lake bridge.</blockquote>
