[QUOTE="monson, post: 23911904, member: 30005"] By By Our Police Correspondent Nov 19, 2018 10:52 AM GMT+0530 ECONOMYNEXT – Sri Lanka President Maithripala Sirisena has ordered the immediate removal from the Criminal Investigation Department a senior detective investigating a string of high profile cases involving members of the Rajapaksa family. Chief Inspector Nishantha Silva was transferred out under direct orders from Sirisena who had been accused by the United National Party (UNP) of preventing the arrest of Gotabhaya Rajapaksa and other family members. Top police sources said Sirisena’s nexus with the Rajapaksas came out into the open after the events of October 26 when he controversially sacked Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe and replaced him with Mahinda Rajapaksa. Chief Inspector Silva was pursuing an investigation into Chief of Defence Staff Ravindra Wijegunaratne who is accused of shielding navy officers responsible for killing 11 children between 2008 and 2009. The Colombo magistrate has already ordered the arrest of Wjegunaratne who is now being protected by the highest levels in the government, official sources said. Removing the top field investigator could seriously undermine the ongoing cases such as the Lasantha Wickrematunga assassination, the abduction and murder of 11 children, the Eknaligoda abduction and the Avant Garde floating armoury racket.
