Silva and Hon. Justices N. G. Amaratunga and Rajah Fernando on 09/07/2007.On the direction of the Court SLT had already forwarded five proposals to Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRC) in order to effect a tariff reduction, switching from unit based tariff structure to time based tariff structure. The court directed TRC to facilitate further negotiations, between SLT and Consumer Association of Lanka.When the matter was called in Court on 09/07/2007, TRC forwarded its observations to court on the last proposal forwarded by SLT and with the intervention of the Court the parties agreed to a tariff revision, with a revenue reduction, containing a ceiling of 8.72% on SLT’s domestic telephone service. This guide line in relation to revenue reduction will be utilized to formulate a new SLT tariff structure on time based method which is to be implemented with effect from 01.01.2007.This case will be called again on 27/08/2007 to be mentioned and TRC will facilitate the process prior to the next date, to finalize the tariff revision according to the agreed guild lines.SLT states that no final order regarding this matter was entered in court on 09.07.2007.Announcement - SLT tariff revision final judgment Tuesday, August 28, 2007 The Supreme Court yesterday (27-08-2007) finalized a settlement of the appeal filed by SLT in Court. By the said appeal, SLT sought to set aside the judgment of the Court of Appeal which had annulled the approval granted by the Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (TRC SL) for the telephone tariff implemented by SLT in September 2003.The matter was settled between the parties in the Supreme Court and the Supreme Court directed that the Court of Appeal judgment would no longer be operative. The terms of settlement are inter-alia as follows. Effective from 1-11-2007, a new time based tariff structure will be implemented. The adjusted tariff will represent not more than a maximum reduction of 9.03% of SLT’s domestic telephone revenue. This was regarded as a fair compromise between the parties. As a further settlement, it was also agreed that with regard to the limited period from 1.1.2007 to 31.10.2007, consumers will be provided a credit equivalent to 8.72% of the monthly bills that had been issued during the said limited period.
