Message: <blockquote data-quote="makka_makka" data-source="post: 5393978" data-attributes="member: 105919">Rameswaram (TN): Protesting "harassment" by their Sri Lankan counterparts, fishermen from five Southern districts of Tamil Nadu began an indefinite strike till a solution is found to enable them fish in the Palk Straits, including Katchatheevu, without any hassle. At a meeting here, fishermen of Pudukottai, Thanjavur Nagapattinam, Ramanathapuram and Thiruvaroor districts referred to the "harassment" by Sri Lankan fishermen while fishing near Katachtheevu and other traditional areas where fishermen from Tamil Nadu fish, N J Bose, President of Ramanathapuram Fishermen's Association, said. The fishermen also demanded that the state and central governments find a solution to enable them fish in the Palk Straits without any hassles. Katchatheevu, an islet in the Palk Straits, was ceded by India to Sri Lanka in 1974 under an agreement. Tamil Nadu fishermen frequently land in Sri Lankan Navy custody when crossing into the island waters while fishing near Katchatheevu, an area well known for its enormous fish wealth.
