You should visit at the correct season and it's a part of Tateyama-Kurobe Alpine Route. This is the stunning Northern Japanese Alps. Between Tateyama Station and Ogizawa you can't drive - closed to private vehicles. The snow corridors are around Murodo. There are several places of interest including the Kurobe Dam. I believe it's the tallest in Japan. It was raining a bit when we reached the dam but we all had raincoats and managed. Mt Tateyama is considered a sacred mountain (along with Mt Fuji & Mt Hakusan) and is a sort of a heaven. But the unique volcanic landscape has also prompted comparisons with hell - there's hot sulphur smelling steam emanating from the ground in nearby areas.PS: For those considering visits to Japan, if you can visit Rural Japan there's a lot to see other than concrete structures. Japan isn't limited to Tokyo, Kyoto, Hiroshima etc.Kamikochi, Mt Norikura are really scenic areas close to Takayama. Just a couple of hours drive. We covered the most in a bit more than 3 weeks, long distances on the Shinkansen and then rented a mini-bus at the destination. There are always friends joining with us and it usually becomes the three of plus at least another four.We have visited Japan a few times and will be in Japan again in the second week of October - This time starting from Sapporo (Hokkaido)- will be sight-seeing away from the city and fly back to Tokyo where we stay for about five days.
