Message: <blockquote data-quote="lkdood" data-source="post: 10570517" data-attributes="member: 92282">Condemning the attack on a group of protesting  teachers in Kurunegala yesterday, Sri Lanka's Marxist party Janatha  Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) affiliated National Trade Union Centre (NTUC)  has warned that the working masses would take stern action if the  government continued to suppress workers' rights.    JVP Politburo member and Head of the NTUC, K.D. Lalkantha said that  the working masses would be compelled to take action if workers' rights  are continued to be suppressed in this manner.    He said that the teachers had been engaged in a peaceful protest in  Kurunegala when they were allegedly attacked by government sponsored  thugs.    The protest was organized by the Ceylon teacher Services Union  (CTSU) against the government's move to arbitrarily remove the  administration board of the Education Department Cooperatives Sector  (EDCS) that was under the CTSU and appoint an interim administration.    Lalkantha said there were doubts over the government's stance on  protecting democracy in the country given the involvement of a  government minister in yesterday's attack.    He said that 15 teachers had been injured and two of them were still being treated at the Kurunegala Hospital.    Meanwhile, the police said it arrested today 16 persons suspected of assaulting the protesters.CP</blockquote>
