Believing in Allah's names and Attributes We have previously discussed how to correctly believe in Allah, which is believing in his oneness, that he is the sole creator and the all mighty and powerful, and that all worship belongs to him. In this article we shall discuss another correct aspect in believing in Allah, which is believing in the names of Allah and the attributes he has given himself. This belief is very important, for instance to deny Allah's names is disbelief in itself, and denying his attributes is a major sin as well, since it is basically denying what Allah has affirmed for himself. Believing in Allah's names: In Islam we are taught the 99 names of Allah, however so we do not say there are 99 names only, we say that Allah has only revealed 99 of his mighty names. His names are found throughout the Quran and the Sunnah, and a Muslim must believe in them all. One of Allah's 99 names is As-Sami, or As-Samee, whichever way you want to spell it, the name means the All-Hearer, the one who ears everything, and the one who hears the supplications of his servants when they call upon him. Another name of Allah is Al-Aleem, which means the All-Knower, that he Knows everything, that he is not ignorant of anything. Another name of Allah is Al-Aziz or Al-Azeez, whichever way you want to spell it, the names means the mighty, the strong etc. For readers who want to learn and know about the other 96 names of Allah, then visit this link: http://www.jannah.org/articles/names.html Now a Muslim must not only believe in the name, but must also believe in the meaning behind the name, for instance all names have a meaning, they describe something, hence when Allah is called the All-Knowing we don't just believe the name, but believe the attribute, that Allah knows everything. Also when Allah is called the All-hearing we don't just believe the name and title, we believe its attribute that Allah hears all. Now once a Muslim believes in these 2 aspects, in the name, and the meaning behind the name, he must then believe that these names are unique for Allah, that only Allah is the all knowing, that only Allah is the all hearing etc. Believing in Allah's Attributes: Now other than believing in Allah's names and the meaning behind them, a Muslim must also believe in the attributes of Allah to which he has given himself. For instance Allah has attributed two hands to himself: SHAKIR: He said: O Iblis! what prevented you that you should do obeisance to him whom I created with My two hands? Are you proud or are you of the exalted ones? (38:75) 005.064 YUSUFALI: The Jews say: "Allah's hand is tied up." Be their hands tied up and be they accursed for the (blasphemy) they utter. Nay, both His hands are widely outstretched: He giveth and spendeth (of His bounty) as He pleaseth. But the revelation that cometh to thee from Allah increaseth in most of them their obstinate rebellion and blasphemy. Amongst them we have placed enmity and hatred till the Day of Judgment. Every time they kindle the fire of war, Allah doth extinguish it; but they (ever) strive to do mischief on earth. And Allah loveth not those who do mischief. So for this we affirm that indeed Allah has two hands as he himself has stated. However so we do not say that Allah's hands resemble our hands, for instance we do not say his hands are covered in skin, with bones and blood, to do so is disbelief. We cannot compare our hands to that of Allah, since Allah is unlike anything, and he cannot be compared to anything else. So therefore whatever Allah has attributed to himself we leave it as it is, if he says he has hands we say he has hands, if he says he has a face we say he has a face. What we don't do is then compare or try to imagine how his hands are, or how his face is. Nor do we make metaphorical meanings saying his hands mean power, or his face means glory etc. Conclusion So a Muslim must affirm Allah's names, and the meaning behind the names, and that they are unique. A Muslim must also affirm Allah's attributes to which he has attributed to himself, a Muslim who follows this belief will be on the straight path and shall be given Allah's mercy in the here-after.
