Samuel Goldwyn Films has picked up U.S. rights to Pal Oie's Norwegian disaster movie The Tunnel. The claustrophobic thriller, set in the dark caravans of Norway's many mountain tunnels, has proven a strong seller for TrustNordisk, which previously closed deals for the $4 million (€3.5 million) feature with Signature Entertainment for the U.K. and Ireland, with Mongrel Media for Canada, and with Rialto Distribution for Australia and New Zealand, among many other territories. The film's set up has a truck colliding inside a tunnel in the freezing Norwegian mountains, trapping families and tourists on their way home for Christmas. While rescuers struggle to help those trapped in the darkness, the tanker suddenly catches fire. The result is chaos. John Einar Hagen and Einar Loftesnes produced The Tunnel for Nordisk Film. Nordisk released the movie in Norway last December, where it grossed some $2.6 million (in a country with 5.4 million inhabitants). With features Dark Woods (2003) and Hidden (2009), Oie has established himself as a director of smart, low-budget genre films. He joins a growing group of local filmmakers —including Tommy Wirkola (Dead Snow) and Roar Uthaug (The Wave) — that have helped to establish Norway as a go-to territory for high-concept independent thrillers.
