‘THIS MAY BE MY LAST SPEECH TO THE ARMY’: GEN. FONSEKA Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) Sarath Fonseka, in a speech yesterday at a ceremony to mark the Army’s 60th anniversary said this might be the last occasion he would address the rank and file of the Sri Lanka Army as he had completed his tenure of office and had been entrusted with other responsibilities. “This may be the last occasion I make an address of this nature to officers and men of the Sri Lanka Army. General Fonseka did not make any specific mention as to why he would not be addressing such functions in the future. However, he is expected to retire in December this year at which time his term of office in the army expires. General Fonseka requested the Army to uphold the high standards achieved by it and leave no room for any one to find fault by failing to do so. He said that during his three years and seven months as Army Commander he had ensured that the Sri Lanka Army became one of the best in the world and thanked all the officers and soldiers who cooperated with him in making this possible. “Our Army is 60 years old today and during this time span, the last 30 years is seen as the most difficult phase having to face LTTE terrorism.
