I have stayed in Osaka for 6 weeks. Bloody expensive. Tokyo even more. 1. April, May is the best. 2. About 70,000 on a good deal. You can manage to fly for about 50,000 with a KUL transit (Hong kong more expensive), and with good enough luck. 3. Can't remember. About 10,000 or so I think. I had a friend and had his letter as well. The rules are rigid compared to other asian countries. 4. The normal list of documents. They asked for a longer history of my bank account I guess (6-12 months I think). Definitely not 3. Flight tickets, hotel booking, etc. 5. Lots of places to list. Do your own research. 6. Ditto. In Tokyo, there is a backpacker street with somewhat lower charges. Capsule hostels (you basically sleep in a capsule, and can't stay there between 10AM-4PM) are the cheapest. Japanese style rooms for more than 4,000 JPY. For a full apartment, you are looking at 30,000 JPY or more in Tokyo. Other islands cheaper but way expensive than here in Sri Lanka. You can save tons of money if you don't opt for rice. Go for sushi and stuff Even if you want some rice, there are vending machines with cheaper prices. The higher end restaurants will set you 4,000 or more for a normal 3 course meal. I spent about 400,000 (about 150k went for different kinds of pleasures) for 6 weeks with a friend lending me his couch for 3 weeks. Trains are somewhat expensive (not talking about tube). Flying is cheaper sometimes. If you travel more, buy a railway card. It will work out cheaper than buying individual tickets.
