If others of the State Departments are to be punished for political involvement, then Yoshitha should head the list for violating the laws as a State Naval Officer, he pinpointed. The Govt. cant practice double standards when implementing the laws, he added.</span></strong></p><p><strong><span style="font-size: 15px"></span></strong></p><p><strong><span style="font-size: 15px">Notice has been given to a large number of Army officers for compulsory retirement on the grounds of participation in politics while being in service. 12 top Army officers have been issued with such notice. Some others are being sent on compulsory leave. If they are subjected to this treatment, then the Govt. should apply this law even to the top Police and army officers who took part in live programs on the Television channels, and urged the public to extend support to the President at the elections. The Govt. directly used them for its campaign, he asserted.</span></strong></p><p><strong><span style="font-size: 15px">While the SLFP has a youth front, President’s son Naamal Rajapkse has commenced a Nil Balakaya. This is a dubious Organization of youths trained in weaponry and arms by the Army. The word Balakaya itself suggests it is a paramilitary group. This is a dangerous trend, he said with concern. More details of this will be made known shortly, he noted.</span></strong></p><p><strong><span style="font-size: 15px"></span></strong></p><p><strong><span style="font-size: 15px">A group of retired officers who supported Gen. Fonseka has been taken into custody, and even where the place where they are kept is not known. 35 of them have been cramped up in one room, according to reports. On the orders of the Defense secretary they are being held for 30 days. The Army has no powers to take disciplinary action against those officers who have retired.
