Message: <blockquote data-quote="damii87" data-source="post: 11073203" data-attributes="member: 363716">Massacre of the innocent   Published : 9:04 am  September 21, 2011  |  215 views  |  3 comments  |     It was a massacre of the innocents in the Under 18 rugby final between Thurstan and Lalith Athulathmudali MV Mount Lavinia at Havelock Park on Sunday where the Thurstan players and their supporters allegedly assaulted players of the opposition unmercifully. This action resulted in some of them being admitted to the Colombo National Hospital. The incident occurred, according to sources, when the two teams was on the verge of shaking hands after the completion of the match where the boys from Lalith Athulathmudali MV emerged winners 23-20 to take the Plate title. Some of the Thurstan players and their supporters, which included some of their old boys, were not happy with the final outcome and had allegedly assaulted the winning team which resulted in one of the players sustaining severe head injuries. This is an unfortunate incident where schools like Lalith Athulathmudali MV and other lesser known schools around the island are striving hard with the limited resources they have to keep rugby alive, but are only attacked when they win a major title on merit. Thurstan was to participate in the quarter-final encounter of the Milo inter-schools knockout tournament against Isipathana on the same day but they had pulled out. Last year there was a similar incident where rugby players from Royal Panadura underwent the same fate at the hands of St. Sylvester’s which prompted President Mahinda Rajapaksa to take action. Hopefully the same action will be taken in this case and those involved in this sad incident be taken to task.
