Johnston insists UNPer should contest poll UNP Parliamentarian Johnston Fernando yesterday called on the party leadership to change its stance on the common candidate and pave the way for a UNPer to contest the upcoming presidential election. Mr. Fernando told a news conference that it was not late for the party to change its decision as there were a few more days to file nominations. He charged the party leadership had made an inappropriate decision to allow an outsider to contest the election. “The elephant symbol of the party will not appear on the ballot paper for the first time in this election,” he said adding that the party should have decided to field an alternate candidate for the presidency rather than supporting an outsider as a common candidate. Mr. Fernando said some members of the party were engaged in a mud slinging against him using web sites. “It is unfair to treat me in such a manner as I have been a loyal member of the party defending the party leadership whenever there was a struggle for a change,” he said. Referring to a question raised by a journalist as to whether he and his colleague - sacked UNP working committee member Asath Sally - who joined him at the news conference, would crossover to the government, Mr. Fernando said that was not relevant at the moment. “What matters is the decision which the party made and not our crossovers,” he said. Mr. Sally said he went against the party decision to support General Sarath Fonseka as he had made some negative remarks on the minorities. “Minorities have no place in the party as they have been silenced and sidelined from time to time,” he charged. He said he was happy about his expulsion from the working committee after making a public announcement on the stand he had taken at the working committee meeting.
