According to party sources the clash between supporters of the two rival parties had taken place in Talawakelle on Wednesday minutes before filing nominations for the PC polls. Both the CWC and UPF blamed each other for starting the clash.A UPF spokesman told the Daily Mirror that there had been pressure from party members to withdraw from the election and keep away from the UPFA. Leading Ministers have reportedly managed to calm down the UPF members While the UPF charged that CWC supporters had attacked them first and torn down their decorations the CWC said a stone was hurled at CWC Leader and Minister Arumugan Thondaman’s vehicle which was slightly damaged. CWC sources said it was the UPF supporters who attacked the Minister’s vehicle and the Minister got out and advised the attackers to calm down. Later CWC flags which were hanging on the road were removed by UPF supporters and Minister Thondaman had once again appealed for calm triggering a minor argument. “The incident was a minor one and there is no necessity for any one to get agitated,” a CWC spokesman told the Daily Mirror.The CWC said the police made a mistake by allowing the processions of both parties along the same route leaving room for clashes.Meanwhile Talawakelle police said they were also attacked by the supporters of both parties. They said even their OIC was slightly injured. However the situation was brought under control by the police a little while later.</blockquote>
