Universal Time Coordinated එහෙමත් නැත්තන් Universal Coordinated Time කියන්නේ World standard එකක්. ලෝකෙ හැමතැනකම නිවැරදි වෙලාව කියලා පාවිච්චි වෙන්නේ දැන් UTC එක.

From 1884 until 1972, GMT was the international standard of civil time. GMT stands for Greenwich Mean Time, the local clock time at Greenwich where the Royal Observatory was located and also where they had the best clocks. The Greenwich meridian by convention was longitude 0° and this reference was used for all mappings. Mariners used to keep one of their chronometers set to GMT.

In 1972 the GMT was referred to as UTC - Coordinated Universal Time or Universal Time Coordinated (UTC). It is a coordinated time scale, maintained by the Bureau International des Poids et Mesures (BIPM). It is also known as "Z time" or "Zulu Time" mainly by the weather communities and the US Armed forces.
BIPM is an International, intergovernmental body that handles all matters related to measurement science and measurement standards - based in France.

It's said that the abbreviation UTC was coined as a compromise between the English & French. Coordinated Universal Time would be CUT, and the French name, Temps Universel Coordonné, would be TUC. So UTC was chosen.

Accurate timing is critical to many applications based on Earth to Space. At the present many Atomic clocks are averaged on many sites around the world.
Two component factors make up the UTC. The TAI and the UT1.

TAI is the International Atomic Time - the average of around 400 atomic clocks - the accuracy of an Caesium-133 clock is about 1 second deviation in 100 Million years.
UT1 is the Universal Time - The astronomical time, refers to the Earth's rotation. It is used to compare the pace provided by TAI with the actual length of a day on Earth.
In effect, the UTC gets adjusted by the insertion of leap seconds according to the advice of the International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service (IERS) to ensure approximate agreement with the time derived from the rotation of the Earth.

UTC is basically the common time standard across the world. Strictly speaking, UTC is NOT the same as GMT though some mistakenly think so. The two can differ by as much as 0.9 seconds, and they are measured in very different ways....
