The fall in vehicle registration is due to higher import taxes on vehicles, but instead of the intended effect, the fall in volumes resulted in lower tax revenue from vehicles as well.According to JB Securities (Pvt) Ltd, 3,059 motor cars were registered in September, up from 3,009 in August and 14,544 Year-on-Year (YoY).The brand new segment claimed 1,879 units from the total, up from 1,738 in August and 9,427 YoY. Of the small car segment, which dominated with 91 percent of the market share in the brand new segment, Maruti, which had remained the market leader for several years, was dethroned.The Renault Kwid gained market leadership with 857 units, while 525 Marutis were registered. Micro Panda came in third with 101 registrations.According to JB Securities, Nissan, which launched its Datsun brand in India with a small car called Datsun Go, is building the car in the same factory as the Renault Kwid.While just 6 Datsun Go units were registered in September, JB Securities expects a rapid increase in registrations in the future, since AMW is the agent for Maruti, Renault Kwid and Nissan Datsun Go.The pre-owned car registrations decreased to 1,180, from 1,271 in August and 5,117 YoY, with Toyota leading the segment with 495 cars, Suzuki following with 408 cars and Honda coming third with 212 registrations.Premium brand car registrations increased to 70 from 68 in August, but were down from 112 YoY. Mercedes claimed over half the market with 21 new cars and 18 pre-owned, while 10 BMWs and 6 Audis were also registered.The number of electric cars registrations crashed to 29 from 51 in August and 528 YoY, with Nissan Leaf accounting for 28 of the total. The SUV registrations fell to 365 from 460 in August and 890 YoY. Honda claimed 105 of the total with 102 Vezals, most of which were not 4-wheel drive, while 78 Nissans, mainly X Trails and 52 Toyota were also registered. Thirty seven units of the locally assemblemd DFSK Glory 330s were also registered.Registrations of hybrid vehicles fell to 1,272 units from 1,391 in August and 5,053 YoY, with Toyota leading the segment with 183 Aquas, 164 Axios and 53 Prius units.Van registrations also declined, down to 127 from 186 in August and 1,336 YoY. Toyota was the market leader with 52 units, while Suzuki followed with 13 units and Nissan with 10.The 3-wheel registrations increased to 4,461 from 4,355 in August, but recorded a decline from 12,406 YoY. Bajaj claimed 89 percent of the market, followed by TVS with 6.8 percent and Piaggio with 4 percent.Two-wheeler registrations marginally declined to 29,116 from 29,365 in August and down from 30,289 YoY. Bajaj was the market leader with 29.8 percent of the share, followed by Honda with 27.6 percent of the market, TVS with 15.7 percent and then Hero with 14.0 percent.
