Sunni Muslims agree with the position taken by majority of the Prophet's companions, that the new leader should be elected from among those capable of the job and prophet had selected them to rule in their life at many event. This is what was done, and the Prophet Muhammad's close friend and advisor, Abu Bakr, became the first Caliph of the Islamic nation. The word "Sunni" in Arabic comes from a word meaning "one who follows the traditions of the Prophet."On the other hand, some  deviated People asked for caliph should be cousin and son-in-law of Prophet Hazrat Ali r.a (who become the 4th caliph after ward). This was their self desire, no close Friend of caliph even Ali had not accept their this idea, as Ali themselves want Abu Bakar to be caliph because of their experience and closeness with Prophet.the People who deviated they make the organization with name "shiaan e ali". The term Shia or Shi'ite derives from a shortening of Shiat Ali or partisans of Ali.they were joined afterward some Munafiq (the people who are showing themselves muslim but are not muslim) they came mostly from Iran they kill second caliph umer, third caliph uthman and also then ALi, their son Hussain at Karbala etc. Their Belief are so devaited that Ali R.a Punished many of them. Why shia are not Muslim:The Shia shahadah (declaration of faith) states:"There is no god but Alláh, Muhammad is the Messenger of Alláh, Alí is the Friend of Alláh. The Successor of the Messenger of Alláh And his first Caliph."If you are already familiar with standard muslims beliefs, you will immediately notice the addition to the shahadah regarding Imam Ali (ra), cousin of the Prophet (pbuh), So They dont accept The shahadah which was approved and teached by prophet.this First Basic point throw them out from islam. other are:They do not follow what Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) taught But Self created Imam who has their own shairah. they commit alot of Bidah (Innovation in Islam) that not match with Prophet teaching.They do not follow hadith and Sunnah only those who linked with their thoughts and prefer those narrated by Ali and Fatima to those related by other companions of the Prophet (pbuh). Shias think that Quran is incomplete (they say 10 parts are missing) whereas Allah said in Quran that he will protect Quran himself so disbelieve quran also.They mourn and beat themselves (which is haraam in islam) on 1st Muharram in the name of Ali,Hasan,Hussain (whereas Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) forbide beating themselves) because they we cant seek forgiveness from Allah throught this beating .they do as a part of their Islam which Prophet Mohammad (PBUH) never taught us to do.On a practical daily level, Shias have a different call to prayer, they perform wudu and salat differently including placing the forehead onto a piece of hardened clay from Karbala, not directly onto the prayer mat when prostrating. They also tend to combine prayers, sometimes worshipping three times per day instead of five.
