Picture: Supplied Footage of a Perth man buying the murder weapon he used hours later to kill his wife has been released by the Supreme Court along with a recording of his call to emergency services after the incident. Self-confessed murderer Sampathawaduge Eustace Sudath Silva has pleaded guilty to murder and agreed he had been upset by his wife’s denial when he came home during a lunch break on February 23 last year to accuse her of alleged infidelity. But he claims he only bludgeoned his wife of more than twenty years with a newly bought hammer after she threatened to kill their two daughters during the disagreement. This week, Silva’s defence lawyer and a prosecutor argued over whether he had premeditated the killing when he bought a hammer from a Bunnings store on his way to work as a maritime lecturer that morning about 8.40am. Today, the Supreme Court released CCTV footage that had been submitted as part of the case in which Silva is seen buying the hammer from the hardware store. The State claims Silva had already hatched a plan to kill his wife when he went into the store and purchased the club hammer, and took it home with him during his lunchbreak to carry out the crime. But Silva claims he had bought the hammer to build a pot plant stand the coming weekend. He did not have the other materials but expected them to be delivered in the coming days, and did not believe a claw hammer already at his home would have been suited to the task, he said. Today, the court also released a recording of a phone call made by Silva in the moments after his wife’s death. The court heard this week that he had told police his wife was dead and that he had killed her about five minutes earlier with a hammer. Lawyers have argued about whether a blood trail leading into the garage was evidence of Silva trying to move his fatally injured wife to a car to dispose of her body and conceal his crime, or whether he had been trying to take her to a hospital as he claims. In the call to police, an operator asks about whether his wife has a pulse several times. The operator also asks whether he would like an ambulance. Silva admitted under questioning from the prosecution this week that he had not checked her pulse before calling police or while speaking with them. He claims that he specifically called a police phone line and not the triple-0 emergency line because his experiences with ambulances in his native Sri Lanka meant he did not expect one to arrive in time even if he requested it. Silva is due for sentence on June 4. Excerpts of the Silva police call as understood by The West Operator: "Police assistance centre - how may I help? Hello, police... can I help."
