Message: <blockquote data-quote="topedo" data-source="post: 8007773" data-attributes="member: 292030">JHU Secretary Minister Champika Ranawaka said that although they had opposed the 17th amendment to the Constitution in principle, he along with the JHU would extend its fullest support to an independent mechanism for the electoral process, bribery and corruption and the judiciary. The Minister made this statement at a special discussion at AIM 2020 at the Lakshman Kadirgamar Memorial Institute organized by the Organization of Intellectuals In Search of the Future Motherland. UNP Westerns Provincial Councilor Shiral Lakthileka, Attorney Nizam Kariyappar from the SLMC and senior journalist C.A. Chandraprema also spoke at the event. A large number of intellectuals were also present at the event. C.A. Chandraprema rejected the 17th amendment and spoke against it while Shiral and Nizam spoke in support of the amendment. Champika explained in detail the practical difficulties in implementing the 17th amendment and also emphasized the need for an independent mechanism to monitor the electoral process, bribery and corruption and the judiciary. The Minister also said that although his party was supportive of the Executive Presidency, it needed to be amended in a manner where it would be responsible to parliament and the judiciary</blockquote>
