Number of LTTE cadres 400; territory 45 square kilometers, says Army spokesmanCases of 13 LTTE missiles recovered: LTTE fired at fleeing civilians(Lanka-e-News, March 06, 2009, 10.00PM) Army spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara says that the LTTE is now surrounded in an area of 45 square kilometers. To a question regarding the statistics of LTTE cadres, the Army spokesman said that the number of Tiger cadres is 400 now and the LTTE's attempt to increase it to 4000 will never be materialized. Brigadier Nanayakkara told that Army 53 and 58 divisions are advancing east of Puthukudirippu while operations are carried out from west of Mullaithivu lagoon too. The special safe zone is still functioning but the LTTE has positioned its 130 mm and 22 mortar launchers in Ampakamam and Wellamullivaikal amidst civilian, Army spokesman said. They launched attacks from these positions this morning. Although the Army intelligence sections have identified them through radar, retaliatory measures were not taken since the Army does not target the safe zone, he told. Army spokesman further stated that LTTE fired at civilians fleeing from Tiger territory in six boats this morning (06) in Kevil and Chundikulam sea area killing one person and injuring three. One boat sailed to Chundikulam coast amidst fire and there were 3 dead persons in it. 76 civilians are in the fleeing team. (See pictures) The number of civilians that have crossed to the state territory fleeing from LTTE is 37,589 now, he said. Security forces that are in clearing operations recovered parts of 13 missiles fired by LTTE. The date they were fired, the target taken and the person who fired the missile is carved in the case. The first missile was fired in April 28, 1995 and the last one was fired on October 23, 2000. Police and Army recovered two live missiles from Thoppigala, s
