I was just reading a report by Central Bank and LBO Magazin,

the report say, the budget carrier Mihin Lanka, since starting it 2007, the airline has lost 5,877 million rupees. By 2010 its balance sheet showed negative assets of 5,628 million rupees.

In November 2009, a 1,552 million rupee guarantee has been given to Bank of Ceylon, a state run bank, on which 1,519 million rupees had been borrowed. Another guarantee had been given for 252 million rupees, on which 1,771 million had been borrowed.

Concluding : What is happening here ?
Looks like the tax payers money and money that could be invested for a something better is invested on a failing and mismanaged airline.

Why cant the the capacity of the National carrier Sri Lankan Airlines be increased insterd?

Mihin Lanka, needs to be discontinued to save the wasting of money of the country.

    Wht do you say guys?

its not mihin lanka but sri lankan air lines whos falling..coz mihin lanka take fuel from sri lankan for a cheaper price, sometimes even free (without paying)..they cant do anything about it as mihin is d national airline. they are not willing to buy fuel for actual price coz then they cant give cheap air rates.

theres more to mention as i have top friends in sri lankan who says lot about frauds and stuff..but i better not
    MIHIN LANKA SHOULD BE STOPPED

Mihin Lanka is not the national air carrier of Sri Lanka bro.
    It's still SriLankan Airlines.

Once upon a time. SriLankan or Airlanka was an excellent airline. Emirates basically destroyed it.

in the past Sri Lankan flew to
    Melbourne, Sydney
    Zurich
    Berlin
    Johannesburg
    Stockholm
    Amsterdam
    Copenhagen
    Brussels
    Vienna

In talking about Mihin Lanka, well SriLankan is adequate to fulfill the travel needs of Sri Lanka. We don't need another airline. I heard the service in Mihin Lanka is also very bad, and flights are damn worn out as well. The same fate seems to be overwhelming in SriLankan as well. SriLankans most european flights look old and worn off, and the entertainment systems in some seats aint working as well. Most equipments within the cabin looks old from toilets to food trolleys. But their food is good. :D.
Government should center their focus on SriLankan rather than 2 airlines, which will make things worst from worse.
I really wanna see SriLankan airlines in a good position.

Mihin Lanka should be stopped and then need to work out SriLankan
    .

ya it was a big mistake starting off Mihin lanka cause it ruined Sri Lanka's aviation industry. We all know how Singapore came to the stage they are now; it's basically because of their great planning in aviation and making it the international transfer hub. If we can make Sri Lankan airlines at least close to Qatar airways, then we can easily convert Colombo as the main international transfer hub in the Asia region, cause we are in a more appropriate region.
I heard that Sri Lankan has started expanding their fleet by buying brand new planes, but those were small a320s. They should buy at least one a380 and b787s and fly to countries like Australia and USA.

    pie in the sky bro...
SriLankan doesn't have money to buy A380's....lol..
nor they have enough customer base to Melbourne and Sydney..
    at least for now..
There main Destinations are always Europe. Nor USA either.
It'll take some time for them to grow..
    We'll see..hopefully

I agree with all of you. For the last 20 years I’ve been a business traveller.
Well, Srilankan; it used to be very good back in the day. Service was immaculate. Food was good and unlimited beverages. I had a British manager early 90s and remember saying Air Lanka far better than British Airways. But now; a different story unfolds.

Srilankan serves for mainly Indian sector; I mean flights from/to ME. Planes are full of Indians and half way down the journey, there is no way you could use a toilet. They use on-board toilets as if they have never been to a toilet. This year February, I flew on Srilankan and serves terrible Indian whiskey on-board, which I could not taste at all. Back in the days, I always used Airlanka/Srilankan because its our airline. But, not any more.

As everyone says, Mihin Lanka is a waste. I still haven’t flown on Mihin, mainly because of long delays and cancellations. If I have to use a budget airline to/from ME, I use Air Arabia for many reasons

mate half of Melbourne is full of Sri Lankans, there are fully Sri Lankan suburbs as well. it's somewhat the same in Sydney. Plus there are so many Sri Lankan students in Australia and all of them end up flying Singapore or Quantas.
I'm pretty sure Sri Lankan can earn a lot if they start services to these cities. At least using a330s

we have pretty A340's easily we can make it over SIN to MEL . yea half of srilankans are in aussie like pitakotuwa  it will be a good income if we start BUT u knw im a regular traveler the places where im flying UL is also availble but we get many cheap tickets than UL in other flights same thing might happen if we start to aussie , people who used to travel spl in Air ASIA wont give up bcz of the ticket price, so we have to think about some marketing ticks too :)

    true..
Most Sri Lankans are living in these countries apart from Sri Lanka on the order.

    England
    Australia
    Italy

    source

SriLankan flies to two of those countries and the kangaroo route is what left. I'd so like to see them flying Melbourne or Sydney, but you think they could compete with Singapore Airlines and Qantas?
    I doubt it dude.
They are like deep shit trouble. They could hardly keep up the European route.
Majority of those flights are delayed. In every week. Ground handling sucks. Before expanding their destination, they should improve their existing operations and then improve afterwards

plus Bandaranaike Airport's runway can't handle an A380. they constructing another runway to support the A380.
