First, I want to explain what is the difference between a SSD and a HDD. A solid-state drive (SSD) is a data storage device that uses solid-state memory to store persistent data with the intention of providing access in the same manner of a traditional block I/O hard disk drive. To simplify this explanation, a SSD is the big brother of the USB flash drive (called also USB memory stick or flash pen drives).

The difference is that a SSD is used like a permanent HDD (hard disk drive) and not just for keeping or carrying data, but is not using electromechanical devices containing spinning disks and movable read/write heads. It have microchips which keep data in non-volatile memory chips and contain no moving parts. This technology has lower access time and latency.

However, this article is not a tutorial, but a warning about that cheap SSD and HDD you can buy from internet, like Ebay, Mercadolibre (in Latin America) or other similar websites. Maybe you have seen solid-state drives extremely generous in data storage memory and at incredible low prices. We call this products “Made in China” (well, the originals are also made in China, but still). Even more than that, have inscriptions known brand: Kingston, Samsung, etc. Well I will save you from an adventure into the realm of super-tender and I will present a Chinese “Samsung”.

Looks good, isn’t it ? So, where is the trick ? The trick is inside. As you see, their motto is “HDD inside”, but more than that, I guarantee you that is more like “SSD inside” :D
Why ? Let’s see what it have inside:

The “technology” uses an embedded controller for a higher capacity and only a 128MB memory chip. So the computer sees the controller size – 500GB, and when trying to write a large file in that little storage space, it’s just rewrite many times the memory chip, until the files is “totally copied”. In facts, at the end you will actually write only the last 128 MB of the original copy. That means your file will be incomplete, so corrupted.
Of course, Asian ingenuity does not stop here. The HDD is reporting to the computer the initial file size and storage space occupied as the drive size is 500 GB.

We are in the scam, fraud and phishing era, so please be careful when you’re buying something from a stranger and not a authorized seller and if you don’t know the name and the address of the seller.
Always use authorized shops to buy digital products. This way, your product will come with warranty and buy protection.

My brother bought a 320GB external hard drive .... But it broke very soon, and when we opened it up, it had a 3.5" desktop hard drive (heavily used before) coupled with a IDE to usb converter. Cheap solution isn't it? No wonder why it broke down so fast.

Actually, there's a list of things you shouldn't buy from ebay. One is hard-drives... nothing wrong with ebay, it's just that shipping screws them
