Yes, an act of few people or groups does not speak for religion itself. My pakistani friend says Islam being relatively young religion it should be given time to adjust. Christianity was violent and brutal at one point, but now it has adjusted and fallen in to peaceful ways.

Christianity is never peace full. Who is Prabakaran, Lord Resistance Army, Hitler, Mosolini, LTTE, Tripura, SPLA,Crusader,Italy, US, France, UK, Germany,Spain, Dutch, Portugal, Serbs, Armenians . They invaded and slaughtered millions. Compared to Muslims it is very very less .They only did in thousands. The is the biggest killer are the Christians. Muslims did it in self defense. While they the Christians wanted to steal wealth. Bible says you should not kill and you should not steal. What the Christians are doing. Nothing but going against Bible.Even they used nuclear weapons on people . Who is innocent. Why not fight the army . Why carpet bomb cities, towns,and villages. Why do ethnic cleansing. It is much worse than terrorism.

I'm sorry to say, your friend has to learn about islam.just because he is a pakistani muslim,this person can't speak for islam as you rightly said. Islam neither need adjustment nor revision, problem is followers are not presenting in the way that has to be presented due to the fact that they are influenced by many other factors. otherwise God's final revelation (Quran) need no revision.
He speaks of the Islamic community not of the Quran itself. As you mentioned yourself, the misinterpretations of followers lead to violent behaviours in some cases and his belief is given enough time to adjust(to Islamic community) things might change.
