They can first ensure that they give the customer the promised 512, which in some areas is not even close. As someone else pointed out, this is because they own a monopoly and the others carriers buy bandwidth from them. So, nobody else is likely to give a better deal than them. If anyone tries to come in with satellite or with an entirely self sufficient bandwidth, they will not allow them to conduct business.

I don't know what the Govt gains by this so it's probably a lie that its by Govt order! On the flip side of the coin, it would help reduce illegal downloads (which the govt. and the servers have a duty to prevent). If it is of any consolation, look at the broadband plans offered by Telstra and Optus Australia!

Yestarday my download speed dropped to 3kbps ..... :sorry:

I called SLT about this this is what they told me,

If you have Unlimited Download connection (I have 512kbps)
When you reach 20GB per month your download speed will be slow like 58kb to 3kB. and this is due to government regulations lu :(

No Downloads for us :(

I just used up my 20GB in 10 days :D

dan ithing hulang thami next month wenakang :growl:

I'm kinda late on this post.. but thought I'll comment anyway.

The 512kbps package doesn't exist anymore. You can upgrade to the new 'web family' package which has a d/l speed of upto 8mbps and a limit of 25 gb. The price? it's only Rs.1400/= something odd... which is less than the Rs. 1600/= something you're paying for the 512kbps connection. Absurd.. I know. I got extremely pissed off 'cause I've been paying that amount for a non existent package and they didn't even inform us. And the limit is still not enough. Especially 'cause it's a family package, it should at least be an amount of 40gb per month. Anyways... here's the link to new packages > http://www.slt.lk/broadband/index.html

Hope it helps. Cheers.

so you've created this account just to promote slt's new limited packages?

FYI: given unlimited packages must continue !! new customers can't apply for them but all of those old packages are still exists !!!

No, I created this account in the hopes of helping peeps out by telling them they are paying extra for nothing. The old packages does exist in the sense that.. the speeds and limits are the same.. however, it ISN'T unlimited. At least that's what I was informed by slt and that's what I experienced (extremely slow net since September). My complaints meant nothing to them so I was resorted to changing my package. *shrug*

Well, the only way that could be done is that you're paying extra for each extra GB that you download. If not, well I think I'm going to be paying a little visit to slt on Monday. 'Cause my limit's about to exceed... and I've only used it for like..... 4 days -.- ffs.

so you've eat the carrot. lol. now you can't do anything.

it's ture old unlimited customers are paying extra money. but its unlimited ;) SLT can't restrict them. if they do, it's against the service agreement. all you have to do it keep eye on your line condition. if they limit your line just give a call to TRC & make a complain. that's it!
