Chinese Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi on Tuesday repeated a warning that Beijing is opposed to Iran possessing nuclear weapons, but defended Tehran's right to peaceful nuclear power.

Yang, speaking at a news conference held as part of China's annual parliamentary session, reiterated that China opposed unilateral sanctions on Iran, against a backdrop of ratcheting international tensions over Tehran's nuclear activities.

Yang's comments come a day after the United Nations' nuclear watchdog's chief said he has "serious concerns" about possible military dimensions to Tehran's atomic activities, and after U.S. President Barack Obama left open the possibility of military action if Iran builds a nuclear weapon.

Israeli prime minister warns Iran

Netanyahu was to meet with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton and visit the US Congress a day after keenly-watched talks with President Barack Obama against the backdrop of speculation over a possible Israeli strike on Iran.

"Unfortunately, Iran's nuclear programme has continued to march forward. Israel has waited ... for diplomacy to work, we've waited for sanctions to work. None of us can afford to wait much longer," Netanyahu told some 13 000 attendees late on Monday in a speech before the AIPAC pro-Israel lobbying group.

"As prime minister of Israel I will never let my people live in the shadow of annihilation."
