Tamil National Alliance (TNA) Leader R. Sampanthan yesterday said India’s failure to support the US-backed resolution at the UNHRC will ‘hurt’ the Tamil people of Sri Lanka.

“India seems to be against the resolution. I’m not speaking only on behalf of the Tamil people, but the Tamil people in Sri Lanka will be hurt,” Sampanthan said speaking to Ceylon Today.

“India is a neighbouring country, and I think they would make a careful decision. They I think are interested in making a decision that will enable them to play a role,” he said.

India has so far remained non-committal about the stance they would take during the Human Rights Council sessions, despite growing pressure from the Tamil populated South.

“The US will not antagonize India. Any move that is done in India’s backyard will be done in a way that the Indo-American relations are not damaged,” a source close to Washington said last month, when the resolution was at discussion phase.

The US has tabled a draft resolution, which calls for reconciliation and accountability in Sri Lanka.
