guys, Is ICS worth the trouble? I'm not quite android savvy or a heavy user of games and apps and all that, so far my phone (live with walkman) has been exceeding my expectations so should I do it? pc companion thing suggests I do it every time I connect it to the pc.
it's not rooted or anything btw.
    and current version is 2.3.4

Most of the guys here experienced a decrease in performance after updating to ICS(Official Update) so if you are not in to rooting, modding, flashing custom roms and if you are happy with the current setup then I would suggest you to stick with Gingerbread.

Thanks, Think I'll stay with Gingerbread for another while then. btw, if not an enhancement to performance, what does this upgrade do exactly?

and I'm under the impression that rooting gets you access to apps which would otherwise be denied in the phone, can you Please give me one or two example for these apps and their functions :D how are they superior (if they are) to apps we can get from the market. I take it rooting gives us liberty to use apps developed by third party developers?

In stock android ICS brings a great deal of performance and visual enhancement but can't say the same for SONY firmware(After listening to users who upgraded their phones). Sony don't use vanilla/stock android it has a version of it's own(still based on stock Android)

Rooting will not give your phone super powers, it is same as an admin account on your PC or Laptop. You know what you could with an admin account and what you can't do with a guest account. Same goes for android.
Installing root apps is just one of many benefits of having root access.
You could over clock your CPU, Remove apps in the system partition which you will never ever use but eat a lot of your memory, You could apply visual mods such as battery mods, customize lock screens etc etc.

You still can side load apps (Installing apps from sd card) with out having root acess. This is Android not iOS:P

hmm that makes sense thanks :P
I'm rather unlikely to need root access for what I use my phone for But I just might do it for the heck of it. will seek the guidance from this thread if I'm ever gonna go ahead and do it.. thanks again.
