    10. Ballantine's

    42371449-Ballantine_600.600x400.jpg

Possibly one of the lesser-known big alcohol brands, Ballantine's is a Scotch whiskey. The heritage of Ballantine's can be traced back to 1827, when farmer's son George Ballantine set up a small grocery store in Edinburgh, supplying a range of whiskies and creating his own blends. In 2005, Ballantine's became a member of the Pernod Ricard family after being sold by global beverage conglomerate Allied Domecq.

    9. Captain Morgan

    42355609-captain_morgan_600.600x400.jpg

It is named after the 17th century Welsh pirate, Sir Henry Morgan, when the Seagram Company started producing rum under the name "Captain Morgan Rum Company," in 1944. Diageo became the owner of this Caribbean-born spiced rum brand in 2001.
Spiced rum initially came from adding medicinal herbs and spices to raw rum and then aging it.

    8. Chivas Regal

    42341312-chivas_regal_600.600x400.jpg

Chivas Regal is a blended Scotch whiskey produced by Chivas Brothers, owned by Pernod Ricard. James and John Chivas began producing their own blended Scotch whisky in the 1850s with the launch of 'Royal Glen Dee'. Only in the early 1900s did the whisky's name change to Chivas Regal when brothers decided to export to the U.S.

    7. Absolut

    42341307-absolute_600.600x400.jpg

Established by Swede Lars Olsson Smith, Absolut vodka is still produced solely in the small village of Åhus in Southern Sweden. Now owned by Pernod Ricard, it was initially labeled "Absolut Rent Brännvin," with "Brännvin" literally meaning "burn-wine." Much of Absolut's fame is due to its long-running advertising campaign based on the distinctive bottle shape. Over the years, Absolut has commissioned more than 300 artists, including Andy Warhol, to create the ads.

    6. Jack Daniel's

    42341319-jack_dnaiels_600.600x400.jpg

The famous sourmash Tennessee whiskey is also considered a straight Bourbon by some, and is known for its square bottles and black label. Founded by Jasper Newton "Jack" Daniel in the prohibition era, Jack Daniel's is produced in Lynchburg, Tennessee.

Sour mash whiskey is named after a distilling process that uses material from an older batch of mash (a combination of grain, brewer's yeast and water) to start fermentation in the batch currently being made.

    5. Hennessy

    42341317-hennessy_600.600x400.jpg

French brand Hennessy is the most powerful cognac brand in the world, according to Intangible Business. Jas Hennessy & Co., or simply Hennessy, is part of luxury goods group Louis Vuitton Moët Hennessy. The Hennessy cognac distillery was founded by Irishman Richard Hennessy in 1765.

    4. Martini Vermouth

    42341325-martini_600.600x400.jpg

Sprung from Roman times when they blended wine with Mediterranean herbs, Martini Vermouth is now a widely acknowledged aperitif. It was created by Alessandro Martini and Luigi Rossi in 1863 in Turin, Italy. In 1992, Martini & Rossi merged with Bacardi.

    3. Bacardi

    42341308-bacardi_600.600x400.jpg

Bacardi remains one of the few major family-controlled drink companies and is synonymous with rum, distributing the spirit to over 100 countries.

It began with Catalan wine merchant Facund Bacardi i Masso's attempts to "tame" rum, which in the early 1800s was not considered a refined drink. In 1862, in Cuba, Facundo created the world's first premium-aged white rum. The famous bat was considered a symbol of good fortune and family unity and was adopted by Facundo's wife.

    2. Johnnie Walker

    42341324-jonnie_walker_600.600x400.jpg

Johnnie Walker is another member of the Diageo family. It's a brand of Scotch whiskey with several labels over a wide price range: From the Red Label, which sells for upwards of $27.20, to the premium Blue Label, which retails from $208 and higher.

Originally known as Walker's Kilmarnock Whiskey until 1908, the Johnnie Walker brand is a legacy left by John "Johnnie" Walker after he started selling whiskey in his grocer's shop in Ayrshire, Scotland.

    1. Smirnoff

    42355407-Smirnoff_600.600x400.jpg

Part of the Diageo team, the Smirnoff brand has retained its crown as "the most powerful." It began with a vodka distillery founded in Moscow, by Pyotr Smirnov. Born the son of illiterate Russian peasants, he would became one of the country's wealthiest men. He accumulated a fortune of more than $130 million by the time of his death in 1898.

    World's Strongest Liquors

    Spirytus

    Proof: 192 (96% alcohol).
    Made in: Poland.
Approved this year to be sold in New York State, the Polish-made Spirytus vodka is the strongest liquor for sale in the U.S. “It’s like getting punched in the solar plexus,” one sampler told the New York Post. Or as one liquor retailer recited in a frightening endorsement, “Pilots in Siberia used to drink it.”

    Everclear

    Proof: 190 (95% alcohol).
    Made in: United States.
The first 190-proof alcohol ever to be bottled for consumers, Everclear spawned a ‘90s rock band and many a bad idea—it’s a favorite among young drinkers because it’s nearly tasteless. For context, drugstore-brand rubbing alcohol averages 91 percent alcohol.

    Golden Grain

    Proof: 190 (95% alcohol).
    Made in: United States.
From the same makers as Everclear, and nearly identical in constitution, Golden Grain is the key ingredient in drinks with names like The Screaming Purple Jesus and Instant Death. Here’s a shocker: it’s illegal in many states.

    Bruichladdich X4 Quadrupled Whiskey

    Proof: 184 (92% alcohol).
    Made in: Scotland.
Based on the 17th-century method of quadruple distilling, Bruichladdich’s X4 is billed as the most alcoholic single malt ever made. Aged in new oak casks to enhance flavor, the X4 can also, as proven by a pair of BBC journalists, power a sports car at speeds over 100 mph.

    201010-w-liquor-bruichladdich.jpg

    River Antoine Royale Grenadian Rum

    Proof: 180 (90% alcohol).
    Made in: Grenada.
Drawing from the centuries-old tradition of “pot stilling”—a method of slow-distilling used for maximum flavor—this strong, clear rum is distilled from fermented sugarcane juice using a waterwheel. Drink it neat (with a water chaser) if you want to blend in and/or get drunk with the locals.

Hapsburg Gold Label Premium Reserve Absinthe

    Proof: 179 (89.9% alcohol).
    Made in: Czech Republic.
Marketed with the slogan “There are no rules,” Hapsburg’s absinthe blend might not be the same version drunk by Van Gogh, the most famous of absinthe drinkers, but rest assured it’s inspired some “artistic” behavior. “We always beg people not to drink it straight,” says U.K.-based distributor Dale Sklar. “But then, who are we to tell people what to drink?”

    201010-w-liquor-absinthe.jpg

    Pincer Shanghai Strength

    Proof: 177 (88.8% alcohol).
    Made in: Scotland.
The Glasgow-based, eco-minded makers of the botanical (that’s right—it’s healthy) vodka say their 177-proof formula is intended to be used as a concentrate: a single bottle supplies 65 shots as compared to the usual 26. What’s more, it’s got wild elderflower and milk thistle, which is used in Chinese medicine as a liver support. You’ll need it.

    201010-w-liquor-pincer.jpg

    Balkan Vodka

    Proof: 176 (88% alcohol).
    Made in: Bulgaria.
Imported from Bulgaria, Balkan 176 is sold in more than 20 countries and, according to importer Sklar, is especially popular in South America (though not yet available in the U.S.). “By nature, vodka is a colorless, flavorless alcohol,” says Noah Rothbaum, editor in chief of liquor.com. “Higher proof won’t add anything, taste-wise. But this certainly gets your attention, doesn’t it?”

    201010-w-liquor-balkan.jpg

    John Crow Batty Rum

    Proof: 160 (80% alcohol).
    Made in: Jamaica.
Jamaican white rum is the country’s version of moonshine. The legendarily potent John Crow Batty was so named, the story goes, because it’s stronger than the stomach acids of the wild “John Crow” vultures, which snack on decaying meat. If you’ll drink to that, you’ll drink to anything.

    201010-w-liquor-john_crow.jpg

    Bacardi 151

    Proof: 151 (75.5% alcohol).
    Made in: Puerto Rico.
Listed as a must-have in subarctic survival, the light brown 151 is used often in more moderate climes as a piña colada floater or on fiery drinks like the Tucker Max–endorsed Flaming Dr. Pepper (tastes just like regular Dr. Pepper, only made entirely of alcohol).

    201010-w-liquor-bacardi-151.jpg

    King of Spirits Absinthe

    Proof: 140 (70% alcohol)
    Made in: Czech Republic
King of Spirits is powered by thujone—a chemical produced by the grand wormwood plant that’s banned in the U.S. Thujone is also the primary culprit of the “absinthism,” a 19th-century affliction; symptoms could include sleeplessness, hallucinations, and convulsions. Yet this absinthe draws in fans with claims that drinking it will make “colors seem brighter, your breath better, and your mind particularly receptive.”

    201010-w-liquor-absinth.jpg

    Clarke’s Court Spicy Rum

    Proof: 138 (69% alcohol).
    Made in: Grenada.
From one of Grenada’s largest rum producers, the honey-colored rum is celebrated for its nuances more than its high alcohol content: clove, nutmeg, white pepper, and cinnamon combine for a spirit that’s as complex as it is potent. Quite civilized, actually.
